CyberSmart Relationships

Kia ora bloggers this week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about how to be smart and safe online.

We were learning how to be smart in our online relationships and to seek help when we need it. The first

thing we had to do was watch this video about this girl that made a billboard with all her personal information

that only her family should know and anyone could fake their age and lie to her. After we watched that video

we made a copy of this Google presentation that had all the steps we had to do. We got to go with someone

you trust and you've known them for a long time or even related. I chose Charlize because she is one of my best

friends and I have known her ever since kindergarten. We were learning this so it can teach us not to do what the

little girl did, not to talk to strangers online or face to face and also that you shouldn’t share your personal

information unless they are family. From what I learnt from that experience on watching that video is that I

will not go on games that you are able to chat on.  What I also learnt from that experience is that I should not

talk to strangers on any online apps, social media or in real life.

Are you always safe online?

Epro 8 Challenge

Kia ora bloggers this week for Epro 8 the Year 6’s and I did this challenge, the challenge is called stem bridges. We had to build bridges that were strong enough to hold a toy car and strong enough to stay in one place & not move around everywhere. We watched these two videos about bridges, how they work and were built. Why I think we did this was to learn to communicate with our group and work together as one, mahi tahi. There were three types of bridges to choose from,  which were all different designs. The three bridges were called truss bridge, suspension bridge and cable stayed bridge. My group was Anika, Shivam and Mikaira. The things we had to use to make a bridge was popsicle sticks, popsicle sticks with four evenly spread out holes, string and cardboard. We choose a bridge to build and it was the cable stayed bridge. The first thing we did was we made the bridge. While we were building the bridge it started to look more like a truss bridge so we decided to make a truss bridge instead.  When we finished making the bridge we tried to make the road by using the popsicle sticks with holes in it and string so we could tie the sticks together.  By the time we finished making our second popsicle stick road it was time to tidy up. When we were tidying up I saw two girls in my class put the cardboard back to where it goes and remembered that we could of used cardboard for our road instead of using popsicle sticks.  I told my group and we were annoyed because we tried about three different ideas to make the road when we could have just used cardboard.  What I think I did well was working with my group and making sure they are helping out and working with each other. What I could have done better is spent more time on trying to get the structure of the bridge instead of sorting the popsicle sticks into their color (color coordinating). What I learnt was that sometimes your plan doesn’t always work out to your original plan.  Do you also wanna know something “teamwork makes the dreamwork” said the author.

Have you done a challenge like this before?

An Amazing Mothers Day!

On Sunday the 9th of May for mothers day we made breakfast for my mum. We made her eggs benedict, with spinach, bacon, hollandaise sauce and eggs. While my dad and sister were making breakfast I was massaging my mums feet. I picked an outfit for my mum to wear and by the time my mum was dressed breakfast was ready. When we finished breakfast we had a little rest and sleep for about 2 hours.  After our rest we went to my brothers house to have a mothers day dinner. The first thing we did was say hello and happy mothers day to all the mums there. About ten minutes after we got there dinner was ready (my brother was cooking for all the mother’s). We had  barbeque, macaroni and cheese, red sausages and croissants with ham, tomatoes and cheese in it. For dessert we had neapolitan ice - cream, choc chip pancakes and my cousin made a big cookie that was a mothers day edition. When everyone finished dinner and desert we all rested our tummies and an hour and a half later we all left and said thank you. What I loved about mothers day the most was that my mum enjoyed the day and had an amazing day with her whanau.

What did you do for mothers day?

An Amazing Mothers Day Gathering

On Saturday My family and I did a mothers day celebration it was for any mothers and welcome to anyone to join. We had breakfast, Brunch, lunch and dessert. For the mothers day gathering the husbands and men were cooking for all of the wahine and there was about 80 wahine there. The wahine were so pleased and thankful to all the men that cooked for them. We did this gathering in Moerewa at the Moerewa Christian Fellowship. We did this gathering because we wanted to do this with other mothers and we also wanted to acknowledge the mothers. There also hasn’t been a gathering like this before in Moerewa. What I think I did well was that I was helping out with setting up, packing up and helping the Kuia. What I could have done better was that I should of helped more in the kitchen doing the dishes because there was a lot of dishes and a lot of wahine. I did the dishes about one or two times. What I learnt was that mothers do great things in our life and are beautiful in all ways.

What were you doing the day before mothers day?

A Challenging EPro8 Challenge!

In Te Ngahere on Tuesday when the year 7 & 8’s went to technology. While the year six’s were at school we did an EPro8 Challenge. The first challenge we were trying to do was Castle Siege. We had to build a protection system for the king because he was under attack. My group is Te Hauata and Manaaki. We used Bamboo sticks, rubber bands, paper, tape and a ping pong ball to build the catapult. When we were doing the EPro8 challenge we learnt about two types of energy, they were called Potential energy and Kinetic energy. We learnt that Potential energy is were all the energy stores up in the ball and the Kinetic energy moves and pushes all the energy that the potential energy stored. For example: when you are playing bowling and you use potential energy when you are storing all the energy and then you use Kinetic energy it pushes the bowling ball. Also the bowling ball is really stiff but when you use Potential energy and store all the energy then you use Kinetic energy the bowling ball will move and roll. The Kinetic energy worked really well because the Potential energy stores all the energy for the Kinetic energy so that the ball can roll. When we were testing our catapult we didn’t finish it in time to be checked by the judge(Whaea Becks). What my group and I found challenging was when we were trying all of our ideas but it still keeps on breaking or not working we got really upset and we were in the pit. Then when Gina came along and talked to us. Then Gina starting talking to us we kept on building and coming up with ideas and then we got somewhere. This made us very happy. What I thought my group and I did well was that we had a lot of ideas that we all came up with and we worked as a team. Next time we do work in a group I will try and work faster with my group and keep on talking to come up with more ideas.

Did you already know what Potential and Kinetic Energy is?

Can You Follow Directions?

In Te Ngahere for the first day we did a reading test that was called ‘’Can you follow directions?’’. First,

Whea Becks gave us the piece of paper with the directions on it and told us to get a pencil. We had four

minutes to do this reading test and it has 23 questions on it. By the time I was up to question 5 I was

thinking that I was doing everything right because everyone else was doing that. The funny thing was that everyone was saying i'm the master at following directions or saying their name out loudly. Then when we

got called down onto the mat that's when my sister Angela realized what the first step said, it said‘’read

everything carefully before doing anything’’ and not one of us in my class did that or passed the test. We

did this test to learn to read it carefully and read the whole thing not just little snips of it because when

we read little snips of it we think we got it but we actually don’t. The last question was Now that you have

finished reading this test you only have to do question one and two!. After that you can draw on the back

of the paper while waiting for everyone to finish. At the end when the teachers read us the last question

we were all like ohhhh. What I learnt from that test was to read the success criteria carefully and to read

the whole thing, now I’m going to try and do this in the future.

Has your class done a reading test like this before?
